There are moments when the light passes just right over the high point of someone’s cheekbone and I imagine my whole life as it would have been in a different universe, tracing the events of this imaginary life from that spot on their face to my death.

I didn’t invent the characters, but by reading the novel, I had a hand in conjuring them in my own mind where they were then free to roam, untethered by plot lines or visual representations.

It's impossible to say who exactly the thieves were, or if the empty frames miss their masterpieces, or whether Rembrandt only painted the ocean once because it frightened him or because it bored him.

Marge always ends up back in the same spot as where she began, idly considering the corn-patterned curtains as she washes the dishes.
